Beyond the Red Flags: Leadership Decisions in Workers’ Compensation Gray Zones

Date: TBD
Time: TBD
Location: TBD

Session Overview

Workers’ compensation red flags are rarely as straightforward as they appear. The same concern on a claim can stem from very different realities depending on medical complexity, communication breakdowns, operational barriers, psychosocial factors, or missing information. Strong leadership requires more than identifying suspicious patterns. It requires the discipline to slow down, ask better questions, and respond without defaulting to assumption, fear, or avoidance. This session examines how leaders navigate claim-level red flags with sound judgment, empathy, and accountability while maintaining dignity and respect for injured workers throughout the process.

Attendees will explore how concerns surface across claims, return-to-work efforts, provider relationships, and frontline observations, and how leadership response ultimately shapes culture, escalation practices, and claim outcomes. The discussion focuses on building organizations where employees feel supported raising concerns early, leaders govern ambiguity consistently, and inquiry is valued over accusation. When handled well, early escalation strengthens trust, improves outcomes, and prevents claims from deteriorating into unnecessary conflict, prolonged disability, and rising costs.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize how workers’ compensation red flags can stem from multiple underlying factors and apply disciplined leadership inquiry before drawing conclusions or escalating concerns
2. Evaluate claim-level concerns through a balanced leadership approach that promotes accountability while preserving dignity, empathy, and trust with injured workers
3. Strengthen leadership responses to escalation by creating environments where frontline teams feel supported raising concerns early, consistently, and without fear of retaliation or dismissal
4. Identify how leadership tone, communication, and follow-through directly influence claim outcomes, workforce culture, litigation exposure, disability duration, and overall organizational credibility

And wow – we delivered. When preparation meets opportunity, magic happens.

Wednesday Night: The 3rd Annual Karaoke for a Cause roared back, benefiting Hazel’s Hands, founded by Dr. Tyrone Spears. Industry icons became rock stars. Together, we raised thousands for foster care and at-risk youth and had the time of our lives doing it!

Thursday Morning: Enter Coach Tyler Gillum, Head Coach of the world-famous Savannah Bananas. His keynote hit like lightning, daring us to embrace creativity, seize opportunities, and bet on ourselves. Just hours later, he and the Bananas brought that same energy to a SOLD-OUT Petco Park, proving that when you seize the moment, you can ignite not just a stadium, but an entire industry.

Thursday Afternoon: We made history with the very first Changemaker© Award Ceremony, presented by the Deconstructing Comp Podcast. This beautiful new tradition celebrates the leaders breaking barriers, driving progress, and inspiring true change in our industry.
