Beyond the Algorithm: The Human Architecture of Modern Claims

Wednesday, September 23, 2026
1:30 PM (60 minutes)
Founders Ballroom

Session Overview

The workers’ compensation claim in 2026 is not the claim most claim professionals were trained to handle. The work is getting harder across the board. Medical severity is rising. More than half of injured workers arrive with chronic conditions. Mental health components are growing more frequent and harder to resolve. Litigation rates continue to climb. Qualified medical providers grow scarcer. New hires are getting hurt at record rates, just as our most experienced professionals retire. The work itself has fundamentally changed.

Our collective response has been to layer technology onto a workflow built for a simpler era, and to hope it’s enough. It isn’t.

This session brings together a seasoned Broker/claims professional, a leader working at the front edge of AI in claims management, a global TPA Executive and a chief medical officer for an honest conversation about what modern claims work actually requires. We’ll examine the architecture beneath the work: the desks we’ve designed, the judgment we’ve stopped having time to form, the mentorship structures that have quietly disappeared, and the gap between what we say matters most, the human element, and how we expect the work to be done.

This is NOT a session about whether AI belongs in our future. It does. This is a session about what algorithms cannot replace, what we’ve allowed to erode while we weren’t looking, and what it might take to rebuild the human architecture our work now demands. Come ready for candor. Leave ready to redesign the work.

Learning Objectives

1. Examine the structural mismatch between the complexity of modern workers' compensation claims and the claims desk we've designed to manage them
2. Distinguish between the functions AI can meaningfully support in claims management and the human judgment, mentorship, and trust-building that no algorithm can replace
3. Identify the specific decisions within their own sphere of influence — as adjusters, managers, medical professionals, or executives — that contribute to either eroding or rebuilding the human architecture of claims work
